The Connection Between ADHD and Communication Difficulties

Many parents are surprised to learn that a speech pathologist can help with ADHD. While speech therapists do treat physical pronunciation issues, we are also experts in language processing, executive functioning, and social pragmatics—areas heavily impacted by ADHD.

For a child with ADHD, communication breakdowns usually look like this:

  • Social Communication (Pragmatics): They might struggle with the "unwritten rules" of conversation. This includes blurting out answers, interrupting others, dominating the conversation with their special interests (info-dumping), or struggling to read the body language of their peers.
  • Expressive Language & Storytelling: Because an ADHD brain races so fast, their spoken language can become tangled. They might ramble, jump from topic to topic (tangential speech), or struggle to tell a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end.
  • Receptive Language & Processing: Following instructions is often a massive challenge. If you ask an ADHD child to "Go to your room, put your shoes on, and bring me your school bag," their working memory may drop the 2nd and 3rd steps before they even cross the hallway.

Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapy for ADHD

At daar, our approach to ADHD speech therapy is strictly neurodiversity-affirming. We do not believe ADHD is a "behavior problem" that needs to be punished, and we do not try to force your child to mask their authentic self to make neurotypical people comfortable.

Instead, our therapy gives them real-world tools to succeed:

  • Movement-Based Learning: We know that ADHD kids need to move to focus! We do not force your child to sit perfectly still at a table. Our therapy incorporates movement, sensory input, and highly engaging activities.
  • Executive Functioning Support: We teach children how to use visual schedules, mind-maps, and planning strategies. We give them tools to "pause," organize their chaotic thoughts, and build step-by-step narratives.
  • Navigating Social Dynamics: We help children learn how to recognize when their peers want a turn to speak, how to ask clarifying questions when they lose focus, and how to self-advocate (e.g., teaching them to say, "I got distracted, can you repeat that?").
  • Parent & Teacher Collaboration: We work closely with you and your child's educators to modify their environment (such as breaking down long instructions into smaller, visual steps) to reduce frustration and set them up for success.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can a speech pathologist diagnose my child with ADHD?

No. Speech pathologists cannot formally diagnose ADHD—that must be done by a Paediatrician, Psychiatrist, or Clinical Psychologist. However, our speech pathologists are highly skilled at identifying the language and executive functioning challenges associated with ADHD, and we frequently collaborate with doctors to provide comprehensive evidence for a diagnostic assessment.

Will speech therapy make my child stop talking so much?

Absolutely not! We love your child's enthusiasm and passion. Our goal is never to silence them or squash their personality. Instead, we teach them "conversational traffic rules"—like how to recognize when a friend wants a turn to speak, or how to stay on topic—so their social interactions become more positive and rewarding.

My child can’t sit still for a 45-minute session. Can therapy still work?

Yes! Traditional "sit at a desk and do flashcards" therapy does not work for ADHD. Our clinicians are highly flexible and dynamic. We follow your child's lead, incorporating their special interests, physical movement, and sensory play into the session. If they need to bounce on a ball or pace the room while they practice their communication goals, we encourage it!
