What is Specialised Behaviour Support (SBS)?

Specialised Behaviour Support refers to intensive, expert help for individuals with significantly harmful or persistent behaviours of concern. Under the NDIS, this service is funded through the Capacity Building category called Improved Relationships, which is designed for ndis participants who need long-term or intensive strategies to address complex behaviours.

A key component of SBS is creating a formal behaviour support plan for your child. The plan includes proactive, positive behaviour strategies for children aimed at reducing the behaviours of concern over time. Specialist Behaviour Support interventions focus not just on reacting to behaviours, but on improving the person’s overall quality of life by meeting unmet needs and building on their strengths.

In summary, SBS is the high-level support for children with complex behavioural needs, delivered by accredited practitioners and involving comprehensive planning and coordination. If your child’s NDIS plan includes “NDIS improved relationships support” funding (sometimes noted as Behaviour Support funding), they are eligible for specialist behaviour intervention NDIS. We can also guide families through obtaining this funding if needed, ensuring no child goes without the support they require.

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)

Positive Behaviour Support is an evidence-based, person-centred approach to understanding and addressing challenging behaviours. Unlike traditional behaviour management, PBS focuses on proactive and positive strategies: it seeks to understand the reasons behind your child’s behaviour and to meet their needs in better ways.

In practical terms, engaging in PBS with us means we will work with your family to develop a Positive Behaviour Support Plan for your child. A PBS plan is a personalised plan created in consultation with you, capturing strategies that are tailored to your child’s specific needs, triggers, communication style and goals.

Our 4-Step Positive Behaviour Support Process

When you engage with our Sydney behaviour support team, we will guide you through a clear process, ensuring you know what to expect at each stage. Our approach is family-centred and collaborative, so you are involved and informed throughout the journey:

Our Approach: Functional Assessment
Assessment & Understanding

We begin with a Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) to uncover why certain behaviours are happening. A practitioner will spend time with your child (at home, school, or other settings) and talk with you, your family, and other support people.

Our Approach: Skill-building programs
Personalised Behaviour Support Plan Development

After the assessment, we develop a personalised Behaviour Support Plan for your child. Our Specialist Behaviour Support practitioner will collaborate with you in this planning phase – your insights as a parent are invaluable.

Our Approach: Evidence-based interventions
Family Training & Strategy Implementation

A plan only works if everyone is on the same page. That’s why our PBS practitioner will coach and train you, your family members, and other key people in your child’s life on how to put the plan into action. We can conduct hands-on training sessions in your home or your child’s school to demonstrate techniques and ensure caregivers feel confident.

Our approach: Progress Monitoring
Ongoing Support & Review

Behaviour change is a journey, not a quick fix. Our commitment to you doesn’t end after the initial training. We provide ongoing coaching, support and regular reviews of your child’s progress. . In short, we’re in it for the long haul – your family’s partner in positive behaviour change.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is Specialised Behaviour Support under the NDIS?

Specialised Behaviour Support (SBS) is intensive support delivered by qualified Behaviour Support Practitioners to help children who display behaviours of concern such as aggression, self-harm, running away, or unsafe behaviours. It involves assessments, creating Behaviour Support Plans, coaching families, and working to reduce restrictive practices. SBS is funded under NDIS Improved Relationships.

How is Specialised Behaviour Support different from Positive Behaviour Support?

SBS refers to the NDIS-funded service for complex behaviours, while Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is the approach and framework used to improve quality of life, teach new skills, and reduce behaviours of concern. In practice, PBS is the method — SBS is the service.

Does my child need an NDIS plan to access behaviour support?

Your child does not need to already have behaviour support funding, but an active NDIS plan is required. If behaviour support is not included, we can help you gather evidence and request Improved Relationships funding at your next plan review or via a change of circumstances.
