How Does Speech Therapy Help with ADHD?

When most people think of speech therapy, they think of stuttering or fixing lisps. However, a major part of what speech pathologists do involves "pragmatics" (social communication), expressive language, and executive functioning—all of which are core areas where ADHDers often seek support.

At our Canterbury clinic, we support children, teens, and adults with ADHD in the following areas:

1. Executive Functioning & Organisation

Executive functions are the brain's "project manager"—skills like planning, sequencing, working memory, and time management. We assist clients in organising their thoughts so they can tell a clear story, write a structured essay for school, or plan out their morning routine without feeling overwhelmed.

2. Expressive Language and "Getting to the Point"

Because ADHD brains process multiple thoughts at once, getting those thoughts out verbally can sometimes result in "tangents" or "info-dumping." We provide strategies to help individuals structure their sentences and organise their verbal output so they feel understood by others.

3. Receptive Language (Following Instructions)

Auditory processing and working memory can be tricky for kids and adults with ADHD. It can be hard to follow multi-step instructions (e.g., "Go to your room, grab your shoes, and pack your lunch") when distracted. We work on strategies to help clients process and retain spoken information.

4. Social Communication & Self-Advocacy

We take a neurodiversity-affirming approach to social communication. We don't teach clients to mask their ADHD traits. Instead, we help them understand different communication styles, manage impulsive interrupting in conversations, and—most importantly—advocate for their own boundaries and learning needs at school or work.

The daar Approach to ADHD Support

We know that a traditional, sit-at-a-desk clinical environment does not bring out the best in an ADHDer. When you visit daar in Canterbury, you will experience a clinic that is built around your needs:

  • Movement is Welcome: For many ADHD children (and adults!), moving helps them focus. We incorporate movement, fidget tools, and sensory regulation into our therapy sessions.
  • Strengths-Based: We lean into hyper-fixations and special interests! Whether it’s Minecraft, dinosaurs, or a specific book series, using topics the client loves keeps dopamine levels up and makes therapy highly engaging.
  • Practical and Functional: We don’t focus on abstract worksheets. We focus on real-world skills, like how to navigate a group assignment at school, how to break down a homework task, or how to advocate for a movement break in class.
  • Collaborative Care: We work closely with parents, teachers, and other allied health professionals (like Occupational Therapists and Psychologists) to ensure strategies are supported across all environments.

Funding Options: NDIS and Medicare in Canterbury

Providing accessible care for the neurodivergent community is central to what we do. Our administration team at daar can assist you in navigating local funding:

  • NDIS: We provide tailored therapy, goal setting, and comprehensive reporting for self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants under Capacity Building (Improved Daily Living).
  • Medicare: Speak to your GP about a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan (formerly known as an EPC). This can provide Medicare rebates for up to five allied health sessions per calendar year.
  • Private Health Insurance: We offer on-the-spot claiming for most major private health funds, depending on your level of extras cover.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Do I need a formal ADHD diagnosis to start speech therapy?

No, a formal diagnosis is not required. If you or your child are experiencing challenges with communication, following instructions, or organising thoughts, we can begin providing support immediately. We focus on treating the specific goals and challenges, regardless of the diagnostic label.

Is speech therapy just for kids with ADHD, or do you see adults?

We see both! While early intervention is fantastic for children, many adults who are diagnosed with ADHD later in life find speech therapy incredibly helpful for workplace communication, structuring presentations, and improving their working memory strategies.

Can you cure ADHD?

No, and we don't want to! ADHD is a neurotype—a natural variation in how a brain works. We are proud to be neurodiversity-affirming. Our goal is never to "cure" ADHD or make someone act neurotypical. Our goal is to provide tools that reduce frustration and allow the individual to thrive authentically.
