When Should You Seek Child Speech Therapy?

Parents have brilliant intuition. If you feel that your child's communication isn't quite where it should be, it is always best to seek an expert opinion rather than taking a "wait and see" approach. Early intervention is incredibly effective and can prevent smaller hurdles from turning into academic or social struggles later on.

You might want to consider booking an assessment at our Canterbury clinic if your child:

  • Is 18 months old and not yet using single words.
  • Is 2 years old and not yet putting two words together (e.g., "more apple", "mummy go").
  • Gets highly frustrated or relies on pointing, crying, or pulling you to objects rather than using words.
  • Is 3 or 4 years old and their speech is difficult for unfamiliar adults to understand.
  • Struggles to follow instructions at home, day care, or preschool.
  • Shows a stutter (repeating sounds, syllables, or words).
  • Is in early primary school and falling behind with their phonics, reading, or spelling.

How Our Canterbury Speech Pathologists Can Help

At daar, we don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. We treat a wide range of paediatric communication and feeding challenges, creating a tailored plan for every single child we see:

Shape 46 (26)

1. Late Talkers and Early Language

We help toddlers and preschool-aged children expand their vocabulary, understand instructions (receptive language), and start putting words together to share their thoughts and feelings (expressive language).

2. Speech Sounds (Articulation)

If your child has a lisp, leaves sounds off the ends of words, or swaps sounds around (like saying "tar" instead of "car"), we provide targeted, fun exercises to train the muscles of the mouth to form the correct sounds.

3. Fluency and Stuttering

We are highly experienced in treating childhood stuttering. We closely follow evidence-based early intervention models, such as the Australian-developed Lidcombe Program, to help young children achieve smooth, seamless speech.

4. School-Aged Literacy and Social Skills

For older kids, the demands of the classroom grow. We support primary school children with pre-reading skills, phonological awareness, spelling, and reading comprehension. We also offer neurodiversity-affirming social communication support to help kids calmly navigate friendships and schoolyard play.

The daar Approach: Learning Through Play

Children do not learn best by sitting quietly at a desk doing worksheets; they learn best when they are having fun!

At our Canterbury clinic, our child speech therapy sessions are heavily play-based. We use your child’s natural interests—whether that’s dinosaurs, building blocks, bubbles, or crafts—to motivate them to practice their communication goals. To your child, it just feels like play; to us, it is highly structured, evidence-based clinical therapy.

Most importantly, we are a family-centred practice. You spend the most time with your child, so we make sure you are actively involved in the sessions. We equip you with practical, easy-to-use strategies that you can weave into typical Aussie family routines, like bath time, dinner time, or the drive to school.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I stay in the room during my child's therapy session?

Absolutely! We strongly encourage parents and carers to sit in on the sessions. A massive part of our job is coaching you on how to support your child’s speech and language at home. For older kids or teens, we might give them a bit more independence during the session, but we will always leave time at the end to bring you in and discuss the progress and home practice.

Will my child just ‘grow out of’ their speech delay?

While some children are late bloomers who catch up, many do not. Because it is impossible to predict which children will naturally catch up and which will have ongoing difficulties, clinical research strongly recommends seeing a speech pathologist early. Taking a proactive approach is always better than a "wait and see" approach.

Do you visit schools or daycares in the Canterbury area?

Yes, we understand that therapy can be highly beneficial when it happens in the child’s natural learning environment. Depending on our current clinician availability, we can arrange mobile visits to local day cares, kindergartens, and primary schools, working collaboratively with their teachers to ensure consistency of care.
