Why Might Your Child Need Speech Therapy?

Every child develops at their own unique pace, but early intervention is the key to preventing long-term communication struggles. In Australia, it is highly recommended to seek the advice of a speech pathologist if you notice any of the following:

  • Speech Sound Errors (Articulation): Your child is difficult for extended family or strangers to understand, or they substitute sound groups (e.g., saying "wed" instead of "red", or "tat" instead of "cat") past the expected age.
  • Late Talking: Your toddler has a very limited vocabulary, relies entirely on pointing and grunting, or isn't joining words together by age two (e.g., "more apple").
  • Difficulty Understanding (Receptive Language): They struggle to follow simple, multi-step instructions at home or kindergarten.
  • Stuttering (Fluency): Your child repeats sounds, syllables, or words, or seems to get physically "stuck" when trying to speak.
  • Social Challenges: They find it difficult to play with other children, take turns in conversation, or understand social cues.
  • Frustration and Behavioural Issues: Often, children act out or have meltdowns simply because they are exhausted from trying to make themselves understood.

How The Team at daar Can Help

In Australia, the professionals who deliver speech therapy are called Speech Pathologists. Our university-trained paediatric team in Canterbury brings a wealth of clinical expertise, wrapped up in a warm, child-friendly approach.

Here is what you and your child can expect when you visit daar:

1. A Play-Based, Fun Environment

Kids learn best when they are having fun. We don't believe in sitting still at a desk doing boring drills. Instead, our speech therapy sessions are highly interactive, using your child's favourite games, books, puzzles, and toys to gently encourage communication. To your child, it will just feel like playtime!

2. Neurodiversity-Affirming Care

We celebrate all the different ways children think and communicate. Whether your child is neurotypical or neurodivergent (such as having an Autism or ADHD diagnosis), we tailor our therapy to their unique sensory profile and learning style. We focus on building on their strengths, not "fixing" them.

3. Working Hand-in-Hand with Parents

One of the most important parts of paediatric speech therapy is equipping you with the right tools. You spend the most time with your child, so we dedicate a portion of every session to coaching you. We provide simple, practical strategies you can easily use during bath time, car rides, or while reading together at home.

NDIS, Medicare, and Funding Support

At daar, we want to make accessing high-quality speech therapy in Canterbury as smooth as possible for our local families.

  • NDIS Participants: We are highly experienced in supporting self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants. We can assist with tailored therapy programmes, goal setting, and the comprehensive reports required for NDIS plan reviews.
  • Medicare (CDM Plans): You may be eligible to claim a Medicare rebate for up to five speech therapy sessions per calendar year. You will need to speak to your GP to set up a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan before your appointment.
  • Private Health: We also accept most major private health insurance funds.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Do I need a doctor's referral for speech therapy?

No, a referral is not required to see a speech pathologist at daar. You are welcome to contact our Canterbury clinic directly to discuss your concerns and book an assessment. (However, Medicare rebates do require GP paperwork prior to your visit).

How long does speech therapy take?

Because every child's needs are wonderfully unique, there is no set timeline for speech therapy. Following your child's initial assessment, our speech pathologist will discuss the results with you and recommend a tailored therapy plan, including an estimated timeline and practical goals.

Will my toddler just grow out of their speech delay?

While some "late talkers" do catch up on their own, many do not. Research shows that waiting can lead to children falling further behind, which can impact their readiness for school. Early intervention gives them the best possible start.
