What is Early Intervention Speech Therapy?

Early intervention refers to specialised support provided to infants, toddlers, and preschool-aged children (typically from birth to age 6) who are experiencing developmental delays.

A child’s brain develops most rapidly during these early years. By identifying and addressing speech, language, or social communication differences early on, we can take advantage of this high neural plasticity. Acting early is the best way to prevent small hurdles from becoming larger challenges when they start school.

Signs Your Child Might Benefit from Early Intervention

It’s a common myth that parents should "wait and see" if a child will grow out of a speech delay. We encourage you to trust your gut. You might consider booking an assessment at our Canterbury clinic if your child:

  • Isn’t babbling or using gestures (like pointing) by 12 months.
  • Hasn't spoken their first words by 18 months.
  • Uses fewer than 50 words or isn't putting two words together by age 2.
  • Is difficult for unfamiliar people to understand by age 3.
  • Struggles to follow simple instructions.
  • Shows limited interest in playing with other children or sharing toys.
  • Experiences frustration or frequent tantrums because they cannot express their needs.

The daar Approach to Paediatric Speech Pathology

At daar, we don’t believe in a clinical, rigid approach for little ones. We know that children learn best when they are having fun, which is why our early intervention therapy is highly play-based.

We get down on the floor with your child, using toys, games, and engaging activities to naturally draw out language and build essential communication skills.

Furthermore, we use a family-centred model. You are the most important person in your child’s life, so we empower parents and carers with hands-on strategies and tips to practise speech and language goals during everyday routines—like bath time, mealtimes, and trips to the local park.

Frequently Asked Questions:

When should I seek early intervention speech therapy for my child?

You should seek an assessment as soon as you notice your child is missing communication milestones, or if you simply feel something isn't quite right. The "wait and see" approach is no longer recommended by professionals. Early assessment can either provide you with peace of mind or get your child the crucial early support they need for long-term success.

Can I use NDIS funding for early intervention speech therapy at daar?

Yes! daar provides services to Self-Managed and Plan-Managed NDIS participants. If your child has an NDIS plan under the Early Childhood approach, we can tailor their speech therapy program to meet their specific NDIS goals and provide the necessary progress reports for your plan reviews.

Do I need a doctor's referral to see a Speech Pathologist?

No, you do not need a referral from a GP or paediatrician to book in with one of our Speech Pathologists. You can contact daar directly to schedule an initial assessment. However, if you are looking to claim a Medicare rebate (such as through a Chronic Disease Management Plan), you will need the relevant paperwork from your GP prior to your first session.
