Fluency and Stuttering Therapy in Canterbury
For most of us, talking feels effortless. But when the natural flow of your speech is constantly interrupted, communicating can quickly become a source of anxiety, exhaustion, and frustration.
Whether you are a parent worried about your preschooler catching on their words, or an adult whose stutter is impacting your confidence at work, you are not alone. At daar, our compassionate team of speech pathologists in Canterbury provides highly effective, evidence-based therapy to help children, teenagers, and adults manage fluency disorders and speak with confidence.
What is a Fluency Disorder?
A fluency disorder is an interruption in the smooth, forward flow of speech. In Australia, the most common type of fluency disorder is stuttering (sometimes referred to as stammering). Another less common type is cluttering, where speech becomes rapid, jerky, and merged.
Stuttering can look and sound different for everyone, but it typically involves:
- Repetitions: Repeating sounds, syllables, or whole words (e.g., "b-b-b-but" or "can can can we go").
- Prolongations: Stretching out a sound for a long time (e.g., "Mmmmmmummy").
- Blocks: Getting completely physically "stuck" on a word, where no sound comes out at all despite trying.
- Secondary behaviours: Blinking, tapping, avoiding eye contact, or changing words at the last second to avoid a stutter.
Crucially, stuttering is a physical, neurological difference in how the brain pathways coordinate speech—it is not caused by anxiety or nervousness. However, the experience of stuttering can certainly cause anxiety over time.
When Should You Seek Help?
For Children (Early Intervention)
Stuttering usually first appears when a child is between 2 and 4 years old, right when they are experiencing a massive burst in language development. Early intervention is the absolute gold standard for stuttering.
You should book an assessment at our Canterbury clinic if:
- The stuttering has lasted for more than 6 months.
- Your child is showing signs of physical tension or frustration when talking.
- There is a family history of stuttering.
- Your child has started avoiding talking or participating in group play.
Evidence-Based Fluency Programmes at daar
At daar, we don't believe in "one-size-fits-all" therapy. Our Canterbury speech pathologists use internationally recognised, evidence-based fluency programmes tailored to the age and goals of the individual.
The Lidcombe Program (For Childhood Stuttering)
Developed right here in Australia, the Lidcombe Program is the world’s leading behavioural treatment for children under six who stutter. It is a parent-led therapy. We teach you how to implement the programme in your child’s everyday environment by providing gentle, positive feedback during fun play activities. It is highly effective in reducing or eliminating early childhood stuttering.
Smooth Speech and Camperdown Program (For Teens and Adults)
For adolescents and adults, we utilise progressive treatments like the Camperdown Program. This involves learning a new, smoother speech pattern and gradually blending it into your natural way of talking until it feels comfortable and sounds natural.
Anxiety and Confidence Support
We understand that the emotional toll of stuttering can be significant. Our neuro-affirming approach means we focus heavily on the psychological side of communication—helping clients manage speech-related anxiety, gently tackle speaking "fears" (like ordering at a café or using the phone), and untangling the belief that perfectly fluent speech is the only "good" speech.
NDIS and Local Funding Options in Canterbury
We want our fluency services to be highly accessible for the local community. The friendly team at daar can assist you in navigating funding options:

Frequently Asked Questions:
Will my child just outgrow their stutter?
It is true that some children will recover from stuttering naturally. However, it is impossible to predict which children will recover and which will continue to stutter into adulthood. Because early intervention boasts the highest success rates, speech pathologists always recommend an assessment rather than taking a "wait and see" approach.
Is there a cure for stuttering?
For pre-schoolers, early intervention (like the Lidcombe Program) can often completely eliminate the stutter. For adults and older teenagers, there is no "magic cure", but therapy is incredibly effective at teaching you how to physically control the stutter, speak much more smoothly, and drastically reduce the anxiety associated with talking.
Do I need a doctor's referral?
No, a referral is not necessary to book an appointment with our speech pathologists. You are welcome to contact our clinic directly. (Only Medicare CDM plans require a GP referral before your first session.
