What is a Language Disorder?

Many parents confuse "speech" with "language," but they are actually two very different things. Speech is the physical production of sounds (how clearly a child talks). Language is the cognitive ability to understand words and put them together to share thoughts.

A child with perfect pronunciation can still have a severe language disorder. Language disorders generally fall into two categories:

1. Receptive Language Disorder (Understanding)
This means the child struggles to understand the language they hear. Signs include:

  • Difficulty following multi-step directions (e.g., "Get your shoes and put them by the door").
  • Struggling to answer "Wh-" questions (Who, What, Where, Why).
  • Appearing as though they are not listening or ignoring you.
  • Misunderstanding complex or abstract concepts (like before/after, under/over).

2. Expressive Language Disorder (Output)
This means the child understands what is being said to them, but struggles to use words to express their own thoughts and needs. Signs include:

  • Being a "late talker" or having a very limited vocabulary compared to kids their age.
  • Relying on pointing, grunting, or crying instead of using words.
  • Using poor grammar (e.g., leaving out words like "is" or "and", or mixing up pronouns).
  • Struggling to tell a story or explain an event in a logical order.

Comprehensive Language Therapy in Canterbury

We do not use a "wait and see" approach for late talkers or children with language delays. Research shows that early intervention is the key to preventing long-term academic struggles. Our Canterbury speech pathology team uses evidence-based, play-centered therapies to naturally build your child's language skills.

Our therapy focuses on:

 Play-Based Learning

For toddlers and preschoolers, children learn best through play. We embed specific language goals into highly engaging games, so therapy feels like fun, not work.

 Parent Coaching

You are your child’s most important teacher! We equip parents with proven strategies (such as pausing, modeling, and expanding) to turn everyday routines like bath time and dinner time into language-building opportunities.

 Narrative and Grammar Skills

For school-aged children, we focus heavily on building advanced vocabulary, correct sentence structures, and the ability to construct narrative stories—skills that are absolutely critical for reading and writing success.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is my toddler just a "late talker," or is it a language disorder?

While some late talkers do catch up on their own, 20% to 30% of late talkers will not grow out of it without professional intervention. By age 2, a toddler should have a vocabulary of at least 50 words and be putting two words together (e.g., "More milk," "Daddy go"). If your child is missing these milestones, a speech pathology evaluation is highly recommended to determine if a true expressive language disorder is present.

Will a language disorder affect my child's ability to read and write?

Yes, oral language is the foundation for all written language. If a child struggles to understand spoken sentences or use correct grammar when talking, they will almost certainly struggle to read those sentences or write them down in the classroom. Treating language delays early is one of the best ways to ensure school readiness.

Are language disorders linked to Autism?

Not always. A child can have a standalone Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) with no other medical diagnosis. However, language delays are also very common in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Global Developmental Delay (GDD). Our expert clinicians provide neuro-affirming dual support to build both functional language and social communication skills.
