Early Intervention (The Critical Early Years)

The "wait and see" approach is no longer recommended in modern speech pathology. If you notice your toddler is late to talk, has a limited vocabulary, or struggles to follow simple instructions, early speech therapy for children is the answer. We use play-based therapy to support natural, fun language development, coaching parents to be the primary agents of change at home, especially if there are concerns about a potential brain injury, and ensuring continued progress in their child's communication skills.

Speech Sound Disorders (Articulation & Phonology)

Is your child difficult to understand? Do family members or teachers struggle to interpret what they are saying? We treat all speech sound diagnoses, including:

• Articulation Disorders: Difficulty physically producing specific sounds (e.g., a lisp, or struggling with the 'r' sound).
• Phonological Disorders: Patterns of sound errors that affect entire groups of sounds (e.g., leaving off the ends of words, or swapping 'k' for 't').
• Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS): A complex motor speech disorder where the brain struggles to plan and coordinate the precise muscle movements needed for clear speech.

Language Delays & Disorders

Language is more than just speaking; it is about understanding and structuring thoughts.

• Receptive Language: We help children who struggle to understand questions, follow multi-step directions, or grasp spatial/temporal concepts.
• Expressive Language: We support children in building complete sentences, using correct grammar, and expanding their vocabulary so they can tell stories and express their needs clearly.

Stuttering & Fluency Support

Seeing your child struggle to get their words out can be distressing. We offer highly specialised treatment for stuttering for children, sometimes facilitated by speech assistants. Our therapists, who possess a master’s degree, are trained in gold-standard, evidence-based programs such as the Lidcombe Program for preschoolers and the Westmead Program for older children. We work to reduce stuttering frequency (bumps, repetitions, or blocks) and build smooth, confident communication.

Social Communication & Pragmatics

For many children, the "unwritten rules" of social interaction are a mystery. Our Social Communication therapy, which includes a study of human communication and speech therapy sessions, is vital for children who find it hard to make friends, maintain eye contact, take turns in conversation, or understand sarcasm and humour. We use role-play, social stories, and peer-based strategies to teach these essential life skills.

Literacy & School Readiness

Speech and reading are deeply connected. A child who struggles with speech sounds often struggles to map those sounds to letters (phonics). A speech therapist can support children with phonological awareness and articulation therapy—the ability to hear and manipulate sounds in words—which is the foundational building block for reading and spelling success in the classroom.

Speech Therapy for Autism (ASD)

We are proud to support neurodiverse children across Canterbury. Our approach to speech therapy and language therapy for autism is strictly neurodiversity-affirming. This means we respect your child's unique way of thinking and communicating. We do not try to "fix" or mask autistic traits; instead, we focus on functional communication, including language skills (including AAC - Augmentative and Alternative Communication devices if needed), emotional regulation, and self-advocacy, tailored entirely to the child's interests.

Feeding and Swallowing (Dysphagia)

Speech pathologists are also the primary experts in feeding and swallowing, as well as in addressing communication disorders. If your child is an extremely fussy eater, gags on certain textures, or struggles to transition to solid foods, we provide safe, stress-free feeding therapy that incorporates language intervention activities to make mealtimes enjoyable again.

Global Developmental Delay (GDD)

When a child is delayed in multiple areas (speech, motor skills, cognitive skills), a multidisciplinary approach, including facial massage, to addressing speech problems is often required. We work collaboratively with occupational therapists, educators, and paediatricians to support your child's holistic development.

Voice Disorders

Children who frequently yell, scream, or strain their voices can develop vocal nodules or chronic hoarseness. We teach vocal hygiene and safe voice production techniques, including voice therapy and introducing different food textures, to protect their vocal cords for life.
