What is Teletherapy (Telehealth) Speech Pathology?

Teletherapy (often called telehealth) is simply speech therapy delivered online. Instead of driving to our Canterbury clinic, sitting in a waiting room, and doing therapy in an unfamiliar space, you or your child jump onto a secure video call using a laptop, computer, or tablet.

Using screen-sharing, digital games, interactive whiteboards, and parent-coaching techniques, our therapists make online sessions just as interactive and effective as face-to-face appointments.

The Benefits of NDIS Teletherapy at Daar

We have seen firsthand how much our clients thrive using telehealth. Choosing online speech therapy with Daar comes with a range of fantastic benefits:

  • Familiar, Safe Environment: For many neurodivergent individuals (Autism, ADHD) or those with high anxiety, the clinical environment can be overwhelming. Telehealth allows clients to learn and communicate in their safe space.
  • Zero Travel Time: Skip the Sydney traffic and the stress of finding parking around Canterbury or the Inner West. Therapy fits seamlessly into your routine.
  • Family-Centred Parent Coaching: For early intervention and paediatric clients, teletherapy is an incredible way for therapists to see your home environment. We can provide "live" coaching to parents using your child’s actual toys during their everyday routines.
  • Continuity of Care: If you or your child are feeling slightly under the weather (but well enough to engage) or if it's pouring rain, you don't have to cancel your session. Telehealth keeps your progress on track.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is teletherapy actually as effective as face-to-face speech therapy?

Yes! This is the number one question we answer. Extensive clinical research and our own clinical experience show that for the vast majority of clients—including young children and neurodivergent adults—teletherapy is just as effective as in-clinic therapy. For some clients out there, it is actually more effective, as they feel more relaxed in their own home and can easily generalise the skills they learn into their daily life.

What equipment do I need to do a telehealth session?

You don't need any complex technology! All you need is a reliable internet connection and a device with a webcam and microphone—such as a laptop, desktop computer, or an iPad/tablet. We use a secure, easy-to-use video conferencing platform. We will send you a simple link via email before your session; you just click the link, and your Speech Pathologist will be right there on the screen ready to go.

My child is very young and won't sit still in front of a screen. Can telehealth still work?

Absolutely. For toddlers and highly active preschoolers, we do not expect them to sit and stare at a screen for 45 minutes! Instead, we pivot to a parent-coaching model. You act as our hands and ears in the room. The therapist will guide you, via the screen, on how to play with your child using their own toys to elicit speech and language. It is a highly effective, evidence-based approach to early intervention.
