Paediatric Speech Therapy in Canterbury
From a baby’s first babble to a teenager negotiating with their mates, communication is how children connect, learn, and grow. When a child struggles with speech, language, or social communication, it can impact their confidence, their friendships, and their early schooling.
At daar, we believe every child deserves to be heard. Our team of passionate paediatric Speech Pathologists in Canterbury provides engaging, evidence-based, and highly individualised support for children from infancy right through to adolescence.
Whether you’re worried about a toddler who is a "late talker," or a school-aged child struggling with reading and spelling, we are here to support your child in reaching their full potential.
Why Early Intervention Matters
When it comes to childhood speech and language challenges, early intervention is key. A "wait and see" approach can sometimes lead to increased frustration for both you and your child. Engaging with a paediatric speech pathologist early can help bridge the gap, equipping your child with the skills they need before they start preschool or primary school.
What We Help With
At daar, our Canterbury clinic is fully equipped to support a wide range of childhood communication difficulties, including:
Speech Sound Disorders (Articulation)
Helping children who are hard to understand, have a lisp, or swap letters (like saying "tat" instead of "cat").
Late Talkers & Language Delays
Supporting toddlers who have fewer words than expected for their age, or who struggle to put words together into phrases.
Receptive & Expressive Language
Helping kids who find it hard to follow directions, understand concepts, or find the right words to express their thoughts and feelings.
Stuttering
Providing early intervention for children who stumble over their words, repeat sounds, or hesitate when speaking.
Literacy Skills
Supporting school-aged children with pre-reading skills, phonological awareness, spelling, and reading comprehension.
Autism & Neurodivergence
Offering neurodiversity-affirming support for social communication, play skills, and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) for non-speaking or minimally speaking children.
Signs Your Child Might Need a Speech Pathologist
Parents have brilliant intuition. If you are ever concerned, it is always worth seeking professional advice. You might consider booking an assessment at our Canterbury clinic if your child:
- Is 18 months old and not using any single words.
- Is 2 years old and not joining two words together (e.g., "more milk").
- Gets highly frustrated or has tantrums because they cannot tell you what they want.
- Is 3 years old and their speech is difficult for family members to understand.
- Is 4 years old and their speech is difficult for strangers to understand.
- Struggles to follow instructions at home or day care.
- Seems to have a hoarse voice or loses their voice frequently.
- Is having trouble keeping up with phonics, reading, or spelling in early primary school.
The daar Approach: Play-Based, Family-Centred Care
We know that kids learn best when they are having fun. That’s why paediatric speech therapy at daar doesn't feel like "work" or "school."
Our Canterbury clinic spaces are designed to be welcoming and engaging. We use a play-based approach, using toys, games, and activities that capture your child’s natural interests to motivate them to communicate.
We also know that you are the most important person in your child’s life. We use a family-centred model, meaning we actively involve parents and carers in the sessions. We equip you with practical strategies, tips, and home-practice ideas so you can seamlessly support your child’s therapeutic progress during everyday Aussie routines—whether that’s during bath time, play time, or the drive to school.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Do I need a doctor's referral to see a paediatric speech pathologist?
No, you do not need a referral from a GP or Paediatrician to book an appointment for your child at daar. You can contact us directly to arrange a consultation. However, if you intend to claim Medicare rebates using a CDM plan, you will need the valid referral paperwork from your GP prior to your first session.
Can I stay in the room during my child's therapy session?
Absolutely. In fact, we highly encourage it! Because you spend the most time with your child, teaching you how to support their speech and language goals at home is a massive part of what we do. For older children or teenagers, we might give them a bit more independence, but we will always leave time at the end to chat with you about the session.
How long are the therapy sessions?
Standard paediatric speech therapy sessions at daar typically run for 45 minutes. Usually, this involves 30–35 minutes of direct, play-based therapy with the child, and 10–15 minutes dedicated to discussing progress and home practice strategies with parents or carers.
