Signs Your Child May Need Speech Therapy

Every child develops at their own unique pace. However, certain milestones can help indicate if a little extra support is needed. It may be time to consult with our Canterbury paediatric therapists if your child:

  • Does not babble or use gestures (like pointing) by 12 months.
  • Has not spoken their first true words by 18 months.
  • Struggles to follow simple directions or understand what you are saying.
  • Gets easily frustrated when trying to communicate their needs.
  • Is difficult for people outside of the family to understand by the age of 3.
  • Shows signs of stuttering or repeating sounds for more than a few months.

Paediatric Therapy Services at daar

We believe that children learn best when they are having fun. Our Canterbury clinic is designed to be a welcoming, sensory-friendly space where therapy feels like play. We offer highly customised support for a wide range of paediatric communication needs:

Speech Articulation and Clarity

If your child struggles to pronounce certain letters (like substituting a "w" for an "r") or is hard to understand, we use targeted, engaging exercises to help them coordinate their lips, tongue, and jaw to produce the correct speech sounds.

Receptive and Expressive Language

We support "late talkers" and children with language delays. Receptive language therapy helps children understand spoken words and follow instructions, while expressive language therapy gives them the tools to form sentences, use correct grammar, and share their thoughts effectively.

Stuttering and Fluency

Stuttering can impact a child’s self-esteem and willingness to participate in class or social settings. Our certified therapists provide proven behavioral techniques to improve fluency and effectively manage stuttering, building your child's speaking confidence.

Social Communication and Neurodiversity

For children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or social communication challenges, we provide neurodiversity-affirming care. We focus on teaching functional communication, helping children understand social cues, taking turns, and building meaningful friendships in a way that respects their unique neurotype.

Building Critical Skills for School Readiness

The transition into primary school is a massive milestone for children and families. Strong communication skills are the foundation for a successful transition into the classroom environment, allowing children to make friends, follow teacher instructions, and begin learning how to read and write.

If your child is approaching school age, our Canterbury team can help ensure they are prepared. Our school-readiness speech therapy focuses on:

  • Phonological Awareness: Recognising sounds and syllables, which is the precursor to reading and spelling.
  • Following Multi-Step Directions: Helping children process and remember longer strings of instructions used by teachers.
  • Narrative Skills: Teaching children how to successfully tell a story or recount an event that happened during their day.
  • Classroom Self-Advocacy: Giving your child the confidence to raise their hand, ask questions, or tell an adult when they need help.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How long do paediatric therapy sessions usually last?

Most of our paediatric sessions are scheduled for 30 to 45 minutes. We have found this to be the perfect "sweet spot" to keep young children highly engaged, learning, and having fun without becoming overtired or losing focus.

What happens during the first assessment visit?

We know that clinics can sometimes feel intimidating for kids, so the first visit is all about making your child feel safe and comfortable! We spend time chatting with you about your concerns and medical history, while using gentle, play-based observation and age-appropriate standardised tools to evaluate your child's communication skills.

Will my child just be playing games the whole time?

It might look like just playing, but it is actually highly structured, evidence-based therapy! Children learn best in their natural environment—which is play. Our speech pathologists carefully select toys, games, and activities specifically designed to elicit certain sounds, words, or social interactions to meet your child's targeted therapy goals.
