Receptive Language Support for Children in Canterbury
As parents, we spend a lot of time waiting for our kids to say their first words. But an equally important part of their development happens quietly: their ability to understand the words being spoken to them.
If you have noticed that your child frequently struggles to follow instructions, seems to tune out when you speak to them, or often gives unrelated answers to simple questions, they may be experiencing difficulties with their receptive language skills.
At daar, our experienced paediatric Speech Pathologists provide targeted, play-based support for children with receptive language delays in Canterbury and the wider Inner West and South-West Sydney areas. We help kids make sense of their world, setting them up for success at home, kindy, and "big school".
What Are Receptive Language Skills?
In speech pathology, we break language down into two main parts: expressive (what a child says) and receptive.
Receptive language is the ability to understand and process information. It is the "input" side of communication. It involves:
- Understanding what individual vocabulary words mean.
- Following spoken instructions (from simple one-step commands like "give me the ball" to complex, multi-step instructions like "wash your hands, grab your lunchbox, and sit at the table").
- Understanding different concepts (such as size, location, and time—like under, big, or tomorrow).
- Correctly processing and answering questions (understanding the difference between who, what, where, and why).
- Following the plot of a storybook or a conversation.
Signs Your Child Might Have a Receptive Language Delay
Because receptive language happens internally, it can sometimes be difficult to spot. A child with a receptive language delay might be mislabelled as "naughty," "uninterested," or a "daydreamer".
You might consider booking an assessment at our Canterbury clinic if your child frequently shows these signs:
- They seem to ignore you when you speak to them, even when their hearing has been checked and is fine.
- They struggle to follow instructions unless you use gestures, point, or show them what to do.
- They often repeat your questions back to you (echolalia) instead of answering them.
- They give unusual or off-topic answers to questions.
- At preschool or the Playground, they wait to watch what the other kids do before acting, because they didn't understand the educator's instructions.
- They get frustrated or tune out during storytime because they can't follow the meaning of the words.
How daar Helps Receptive Language Development
At daar, we take a warm, neurodiversity-affirming, and play-based approach to building receptive language skills. We know that children don’t learn by being drilled with flashcards at a desk.
Instead, our Canterbury therapists get down on the floor to engage your child through games, books, obstacle courses, and sensory play. We use highly engaging strategies—like visual aids, pausing, and emphasising key words—to help your child successfully decode the language around them.
Because you are with your child every day, we also focus heavily on parent coaching. We empower mums, dads, and carers with simple adjustments you can make at home to ensure your child understands you better, reducing frustration and tantrums.
NDIS Support in Canterbury
Supporting a child’s receptive language is crucial for building their independence and social capacity. daar proudly offers services for Self-Managed and Plan-Managed NDIS participants under the Early Childhood approach. We work hand-in-hand with your child's educators and other allied health professionals to ensure their NDIS goals are met across all environments.
Ease the Frustration and Build Understanding
If you are worried about your child's ability to follow instructions or understand the world around them, the compassionate team at daar is here to help.
Frequently Asked Questions:
What is the difference between receptive and expressive language?
Think of communication as a two-way street. Receptive language is the "input" (what your child understands from others), while expressive language is the "output" (how your child shares their own thoughts, using words, sentences, or gestures). It is very common for children to have difficulties with one area but not the other, though many children experience delays in both. In our assessments at Daar, we thoroughly check both sides of your child's communication profile.
Is my child deliberately ignoring me, or is it a receptive language issue?
This is one of the most common questions we get from parents! It can be incredibly exhausting when you have to repeat instructions five times. If your child frequently doesn't follow directions, it’s rarely because they are being purposefully defiant. Often, they simply haven't processed the language, the instruction was too long, or it contained concepts they don't understand yet. A speech pathology assessment can help uncover exactly why they aren't responding and give you strategies to help them listen and understand.
Can receptive language difficulties affect my child at primary school?
Yes, absolutely. Once a child starts kindergarten or primary school, the language demands skyrocket. Teachers give complex, multi-step instructions ("Put your reading folder in the blue tub, wash your hands, and sit on the mat"). Furthermore, receptive language forms the absolute foundation of reading comprehension. If your child is struggling to understand spoken language now, early intervention before they start school is highly recommended to give them the best possible start to their education.
