Why Generic Speech Exercises Don’t Work

It is tempting to search online for "how to fix a lisp" or "stuttering exercises." But the muscles of the mouth, throat, and voice box are incredibly complex. If an individual practises the wrong movement over and over, they can accidentally reinforce bad habits that become even harder to correct later.

A successful speech exercise program requires a professional assessment first. Our Canterbury team identifies exactly why a communication breakdown is happening and then selects the very specific clinical exercises needed to target that exact physical or cognitive process.

Targeted Speech Exercises for Every Need

At daar, we develop specialised exercise programs for a wide variety of communication challenges across all age groups:

Shape 46 (26)
Articulation and Speech Sounds (Kids & Adults)

For those who substitute, leave out, or distort certain sounds (like saying "wabbit" instead of "rabbit," or struggling with the "th" sound).

  • What it looks like: Phonetic placement techniques (learning exactly where to put the teeth, tongue, and lips), "minimal pairs" listening and speaking drills, and graded sound repetition from single syllables up to full conversations.
Shape 46 (3)
Motor Speech Disorders (Apraxia & Dysarthria)

For individuals who know what they want to say but whose brain struggles to coordinate the mouth muscles (Apraxia), or whose mouth muscles are too weak/uncoordinated to speak clearly (Dysarthria).

  • What it looks like: Intensive, high-repetition motor drilling. We use pacing exercises, tactile cueing (touching the face/jaw to guide movement), and oral-motor coordination tasks to rebuild neural pathways.
Shape 46 (3)
Voice and Vocal Health

For teachers, singers, or individuals experiencing vocal nodules, chronic hoarseness, volume control issues, or Parkinson's-related voice changes.

  • What it looks like: Vocal hygiene routines, breath-support exercises (diaphragmatic breathing), vocal slides, and volume-boosting drills to achieve a clear, strong, and safe voice without straining the vocal cords.
Shape 46 (31)
Fluency and Stuttering Support

For school-aged children, teens, and adults who want to manage a stutter or cluttering disorder.

  • What it looks like: Smooth speech techniques, gentle onset exercises (starting the vocal cords gently), breathing coordination, and prolonged speech drills.

The daar Approach to Home Practice

Therapy doesn't end when you walk out the doors of our Canterbury clinic. In fact, what happens between appointments is where the real magic happens.

  • For Kids: We make practice fun. We provide parents with engaging games, flashcards, and activities that turn 10 minutes of targeted speech exercises into play time. We teach you how to integrate these drills into the car ride to school or during bath time.
  • For Adults: We focus on functional practice. Your exercises will be designed around your everyday life—whether that’s reading the morning paper aloud, ordering a coffee, or practising a presentation for work.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Will you give us activities to do between appointments?

Yes, absolutely! Creating a Home Practice Program is a core part of our service at daar. At the end of every session at our Canterbury clinic, your Speech Pathologist will show you exactly what to practise, provide you with the necessary materials, and teach you how to do the exercises correctly at home.

Can I just print speech worksheets off the internet?

While printing word lists or flashcards can be a helpful starting point for materials, the technique is what matters. If a child spends 20 minutes practising a sound with incorrect tongue placement, they are actively strengthening the wrong habit. A Speech Pathologist will assess the issue, teach the correct placement, and then provide the right lists to practise with.

My child hates practising. What should I do?

This is very common! Let your clinician at daar know. We are experts at gamifying speech exercises. We can adjust the home program to integrate practice into activities they already love, like hiding flashcards around the house, using a favourite board game, or incorporating exercises into physical play.
