Early Childhood Stuttering: The Lidcombe Program

It is relatively common for toddlers to go through a phase of bumpy speech as their brains try to keep up with their rapidly expanding vocabularies. However, if a stutter persists, early intervention is critical.

At our Liverpool clinic, we are highly trained in delivering the Lidcombe Program, an evidence-based behavioral treatment developed right here in Australia (at the University of Sydney) that is now the global gold standard for childhood stuttering.

  • Parent-Led Therapy: The Lidcombe Program is conducted primarily by you in your own home.
  • Positive Reinforcement: It is a gentle, highly positive program. We coach parents on how to accurately measure their child's stutter and how to offer specific verbal contingencies (praise) for smooth, bump-free speech.
  • Highly Effective: When started in the preschool years, the Lidcombe Program has an incredibly high success rate, often eliminating the stutter entirely before the child enters Kindergarten in NSW.

Teen and Adult Fluency: Shaping and Modification

As children grow into teenagers and adults, the nature of stuttering changes. It often becomes more entrenched and can severely impact participation in high school, HSC oral exams, university presentations, and the South Western Sydney job market.

For older adolescents and adults, the speech pathologists at daar utilize advanced, evidence-based adult fluency strategies, tailored to your specific lifestyle:

  • The Camperdown Program: Another groundbreaking Australian treatment, this program teaches "prolonged speech" to help adults achieve stutter-free speech, gradually shaping it to sound completely natural in everyday conversations.
  • Stuttering Modification: For some adults, the goal is not perfect fluency, but rather learning how to stutter easily and without tension. We teach techniques to gently ease out of speech blocks, reducing the physical struggle and the fear of getting "stuck."

Treating Cluttering

While stuttering involves knowing exactly what you want to say but getting physically blocked, Cluttering is a different fluency disorder entirely. Cluttering involves a rapid, irregular rate of speech where thoughts race ahead of the mouth. Syllables get merged, words are dropped, and speech sounds "jerky" or mumbled, making the speaker very hard to understand.

Our Liverpool therapists use specific pacing, pausing, and self-monitoring strategies to help individuals who clutter slow down, organize their thoughts, and articulate their messages clearly to the listener.

Addressing the Anxiety of Speaking

You cannot separate stuttering from the anxiety it causes. The fear of an upcoming phone call or the dread of introducing yourself in a meeting can cause physical tension in the throat and chest, which ironically makes the stutter worse.

At daar, we take a holistic approach. Alongside practical speech techniques, we help our clients build robust self-advocacy skills. We provide a safe space to practice high-stress scenarios—like making a phone call, asking for a raise, or presenting to a classroom—so you can walk out of our clinic and into the community with unwavering confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Will my toddler just "grow out" of their stutter?

This is a risk many families take, but it’s a gamble. While it is true that some toddlers naturally recover from transient stuttering within 6 months, others do not. Because treatments like the Lidcombe Program are profoundly effective when implemented before age 6, we highly recommend bringing your child to our Liverpool clinic for an assessment if they have been stuttering for more than a few months, or if they appear frustrated when speaking.

I have stuttered my entire adult life. Is it too late to get therapy?

Never. While childhood treatment aims to eliminate stuttering, adult therapy focuses on highly effective management. At daar, we work with many adults across South Western Sydney using proven methods (like the Camperdown Program) to help them control their speech rate, minimize blocks, and completely remove the fear and anxiety associated with speaking in public or the workplace.

Should I tell my child to "slow down" or "take a deep breath" when they stutter?

While said with the best intentions, telling a child to "slow down, think about what you want to say, or take a deep breath" can actually increase their anxiety and make the stuttering worse, as it draws negative attention to the struggle. Instead, maintain natural eye contact, wait patiently for them to finish, and schedule an appointment with our Liverpool fluency specialists to learn the most effective, evidence-based ways to support their speech at home.
