What is Speech Pathology?

You might hear people use the term "speech therapy," but in Australia, the official allied health profession is Speech Pathology.

We do much more than just help people who have a lisp or a stutter. Speech Pathologists are the leading experts in diagnosing and treating all difficulties related to communication and swallowing. This includes:

  • Speech: How clearly sounds and words are physically produced.
  • Language: How well someone understands what is being said (receptive language) and how they put words together to share their own thoughts (expressive language).
  • Fluency: The smoothness and rhythm of speech (e.g., stuttering).
  • Voice: The pitch, volume, and quality of the voice.
  • Literacy: Pre-reading, phonics, and spelling skills.
  • Dysphagia: Difficulties with feeding, chewing, and swallowing safely.
  • Multimodal Communication: Using Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), like speech-generating iPads or communication boards.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Do I need a referral from my GP to book in?

No, you do not need a doctor's referral to see a speech pathologist at our Canterbury clinic. You can reach out and book with us directly. The only exception is if you wish to claim a portion of the fee through Medicare; in that case, your GP must draw up a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan prior to your first session.

Are your speech pathology sessions covered by the NDIS?

Absolutely. We have extensive experience working within the NDIS framework. We support both Plan-Managed and Self-Managed participants, offering everything from Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) for toddlers to complex dysphagia and AAC management for adult participants.

Do you offer telehealth or mobile visits?

Yes. We understand that getting to the clinic isn't always possible. We offer highly effective Telehealth (video) sessions across Australia. Depending on clinician availability, we also provide limited mobile visits to local Canterbury schools, day cares, or aged care facilities. Please call our reception team to discuss mobile visit availability.
