What is a Speech Sound Disorder (SSD)?

A Speech Sound Disorder is an umbrella term used by allied health professionals when an individual has persistent, age-inappropriate difficulty saying words clearly.

Making speech sounds is highly complex. It requires the brain to know the 'rules' of sounds, and the mouth muscles (lips, tongue, jaw, vocal cords) to physically execute those rules. Because of this complexity, Speech Sound Disorders are generally broken down into two main categories:

1. Phonological Disorders (The Brain's "Rules")

This occurs when an individual can physically make a sound, but their brain learns the wrong linguistic pattern or "rule." They might simplify words to make them easier to say.

  • Examples: Leaving the last sound off all words (saying "do" instead of "dog"), or swapping sounds made at the back of the throat for sounds at the front (saying "tat" instead of "cat").

2. Articulation Disorders (The Physical Motor Movement)

This occurs when the mouth struggles to physically form a specific sound in isolation.

  • Examples: A lisp, where the tongue sits in the wrong spot for "s" or "z" sounds, or struggling to create the "r" sound (saying "wed" instead of "red").
Note: Our Canterbury clinic also provides highly specialised therapy for motor-planning speech sound disorders, such as Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS).

Signs Your Child May Have a Speech Sound Disorder

It is completely typical for toddlers to make cute pronunciation errors. However, as they grow, their speech should become progressively clearer.

A good rule of thumb for "intelligibility" (how much of a child's speech a stranger can understand) is:

  • 2 Years Old: Approx. 50% understood by unfamiliar listeners.
  • 3 Years Old: Approx. 75% understood by unfamiliar listeners.
  • 4 Years Old: Approx. 100% understood by unfamiliar listeners (even if a few tricky sounds like "th" or "r" aren't perfect yet).

You should consider booking an assessment at daar if your child:

  • Is not meeting the intelligibility guidelines above.
  • Leaves the first or last consonant off words.
  • Has a persistent lisp past the age of 4.5 years.
  • Is becoming frustrated, quiet, or acting out because they are constantly asked to repeat themselves.
  • Is starting early primary school and struggling with phonics, reading, or spelling (which are closely linked to speech sounds).

How daar Treats Speech Sound Disorders

Resolving a speech sound disorder requires targeted, evidence-based therapy. Simply asking a child to "watch my mouth and say it again" at home usually isn't enough to correct deeply ingrained habits.

Our Canterbury team follows a structured, highly effective clinical approach:

  1. Pinpoint Diagnosis: We use standardised Australian assessments to determine exactly which sounds are in error and why (is it a phonological rule issue, or an articulation motor issue?).
  2. Evidence-Based Interventions: We utilise world-leading therapy approaches tailored to the specific disorder. This might include "Minimal Pairs" for phonological delays, or tactile-phonetic placement techniques for articulation issues.
  3. Play-Based Clinics: Repetition is key to changing speech habits. We disguise high-repetition speech drills as incredibly fun, engaging games in our welcoming Canterbury clinic.
  4. Empowering Home Practice: Changing the brain takes daily practice! We provide parents with a custom, easy-to-follow home program so you can support your child’s speech goals during typical daily routines.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Will my child just grow out of it?

While children outgrow some early pronunciation errors, many true Speech Sound Disorders require clinical intervention to correct. Because unresolved speech issues can heavily impact a child's ability to learn phonics, reading, and spelling in Kindergarten, we always recommend an assessment rather than taking a "wait and see" approach.

How long does therapy take to fix a speech sound disorder?

The timeline varies significantly depending on whether it is an articulation or phonological issue, how many sounds the child struggles with, their age, and—most importantly—how much consistent practice is completed at home between clinic visits. After the initial assessment, your therapist at daar will give you a clear therapeutic roadmap.

Is it my fault my child can't say certain sounds?

Absolutely not. Speech sound disorders are incredibly common in Australia and are not caused by poor parenting, baby talk, or a lack of reading at home. They are simply related to how your child's brain is processing the linguistic rules or coordinating the physical muscles of the mouth. We are here to provide solutions, not judgment!
