What is a Speech Sound Disorder?

Learning to speak clearly is a complex physical and cognitive process. It requires the precise coordination of the lips, teeth, tongue, palate, and jaw, as well as an understanding of the "rules" of the English language.

When an individual has trouble producing certain sounds past the expected age, it generally falls into two categories:

  • Articulation Disorders: This is a physical or motor issue. The individual has difficulty physically forming a specific speech sound. A common example is a lisp, where an "s" sounds like a "th" (e.g., saying "thun" instead of "sun"), or struggling to roll an "r" sound (e.g., saying "wabbit" instead of "rabbit").
  • Phonological Disorders: This is a pattern or rule-based issue. The child can physically make the sound, but their brain applies the wrong "rule" when speaking. For example, they might leave the final consonant off every word (saying "ca" for "cat" or "do" for "dog"), or swap all sounds made at the back of the throat to the front of the mouth (saying "tat" for "cat").

At our Canterbury clinic, we carefully assess your or your child's speech to determine exactly what the underlying issue is, ensuring we use the most effective treatment approach.

Signs It Might Be Time for an Assessment

It is completely normal for toddlers to make cute pronunciation errors as they learn to talk! However, as their nervous system matures, they should hit specific milestones.

You might consider booking a speech sound assessment at our Canterbury clinic if you notice:

  • At 2 years old: You (the parents/carers) understand less than 50% of what they say.
  • At 3 years old: You understand less than 75% of what they say, or familiar adults (like grandparents or day care educators) struggle to understand them.
  • At 4 years old: Strangers cannot understand their speech most of the time.
  • Your child leaves the beginnings or ends off words entirely.
  • A noticeable lisp persists as they approach primary school age.
  • Your child is becoming highly frustrated, withdrawing from conversations, or being teased about how they talk.
  • In Adults: You have a residual speech error from childhood that affects your confidence at work or socially.

How daar Treats Speech Sound Difficulties

Effective articulation therapy is about much more than just printing off word lists. It is about actively retraining the brain and the mouth to form new habits.

Here is how our Canterbury team helps you achieve clear speech:

  1. Comprehensive Assessment: We listen carefully to spontaneous speech, use standardised articulation tests, and examine the structure and strength of the mouth and jaw to pinpoint the exact sounds causing trouble.
  2. Targeted Therapy: We teach the individual exactly where to place their tongue, teeth, and lips to make the correct sound.
  3. High-Repetition Practice: Breaking a habit takes practice! For kids, we disguise these high-repetition drills as highly engaging, play-based games. For adults, we use tailored, functional drills that suit your daily life.
  4. Working Up the Ladder: We start by practising the sound on its own, then move up to syllables, words, sentences, and finally, everyday conversation.
  5. A Personalised Home Programme: Consistency is key. We provide you with simple, fun activities to practise at home between your clinic visits to lock in those new speech sounds permanently.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How long does articulation therapy take?

This depends on several factors: the individual's age, whether it is an articulation (motor) or phonological (rule-based) issue, how many sounds are affected, and critically, how much consistent home practice is completed between sessions. Following your initial assessment at daar, your clinician will provide you with a clear timeline and realistic expectations.

Can my child just practise reading words at home to fix their speech?

If a child does not know how to physically make a tricky sound, practising saying it wrong at home will only make the incorrect habit stronger! A speech pathologist needs to first teach the child the correct physical placement of the tongue and lips. Once the child can confidently make the sound in the clinic, then home practice becomes incredibly effective.

Is it too late to fix a speech error as an adult?

Not at all. While the motor patterns for speech are deeply ingrained by adulthood, neuroplasticity means your brain can always learn new tricks. Whether it's a residual lisp or difficulty with specific consonants, our adult articulation therapy focuses on targeted motor retraining and active self-monitoring to help you finally master clear pronunciation.
