Recognizing the Signs: Does My Child Need Stuttering Therapy?

Between the ages of 2 and 5, many children go through a phase of "normal developmental dysfluency" as their brains try to keep up with their rapidly expanding vocabulary. However, true chronic stuttering requires professional treatment and will rarely go away on its own once it becomes an ingrained habit.

You should book an assessment with our speech pathology team if you notice any of the following signs:

  • Part-Word Repetitions: Repeating the first sound of a word frequently (e.g., "c-c-c-can I play?").
  • Prolongations: Stretching a sound out unnaturally (e.g., "sssssssssometimes").
  • Silent Blocks: Your child opens their mouth to speak, but no sound comes out, and they look "frozen."
  • Physical Struggle: You notice tension in their neck or jaw, rapid eye blinking, or lip trembling when they speak.
  • Avoidance or Frustration: Your child gives up trying to talk, says "I can't say it," or avoids speaking in social situations.

Gold-Standard Stuttering Treatment at daar

Stuttering treatment must be tailored to the child’s age and the severity of their stutter. Telling a child to simply "slow down" or "take a deep breath" is ineffective. Instead, our Canterbury team utilizes scientifically proven therapy programs:

1. Early Intervention: The Lidcombe Program
For children under the age of 6, early intervention is critical. We are highly experienced in delivering the Lidcombe Program, recognized globally as the most effective treatment for early childhood stuttering.

  • This is a behavioural treatment where parents are trained as the therapists.
  • We teach you how to gently, positively, and effectively reinforce smooth, bump-free speech during everyday play at home, resulting in rapid reductions in stuttering.

2. Therapy for School-Aged Children and Teens
If a child continues to stutter into primary school or high school, our approach shifts to teaching them direct fluency strategies and managing speech anxiety.

  • Smooth Speech & Fluency Shaping: We teach specific techniques to control the vocal cords, ensuring gentle onsets to words and continuous, rhythmic breathing to eliminate blocks.
  • Stuttering Modification: We teach older children how to "stutter easily" with less physical tension, so they don't panic when a block happens.
  • Building Confidence: We provide a safe space to discuss the emotional impact of a stutter, building resilience against bullying and empowering teens to advocate for themselves.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Will my child naturally outgrow their stutter?

While some children do recover naturally from early stuttering, there is currently no way for clinicians to predict which children will recover and which will develop a lifelong chronic stutter. Because treatment is significantly more effective before a child turns 6 (prior to the brain's neuroplasticity slowing down), the clinical recommendation is always to seek an evaluation rather than "waiting and seeing."

What causes a child to stutter?

Stuttering is not caused by bad parenting, anxiety, or trauma. It is a neurological condition related to how the brain coordinates the muscles used for speech. Genetics also play a major role; if a parent or relative has a history of stuttering, a child is much more likely to develop one.

How long does stuttering treatment take?

The timeline varies widely based on the child. For young children in the Lidcombe Program, parents often see a massive reduction in stuttering within 3 to 6 months of consistent daily home practice. For older children or teenagers, therapy is often an ongoing process of learning to manage speech flow and reduce anxiety during stressful speaking situations.
