What is Teletherapy?

Teletherapy is the delivery of speech pathology services over a secure, high-quality video connection.

Instead of sitting across a desk from your clinician, you connect with them face-to-face via your computer, laptop, or tablet. At daar, our teletherapy sessions are just as rigorous, individualised, and evidence-based as our in-clinic appointments. Using screen sharing, interactive digital games, and virtual whiteboards, we create highly engaging therapy sessions that deliver real results.

The Benefits of Teletherapy at daar

Why are so many Australian families and NDIS participants choosing teletherapy?

  1. Ultimate Convenience: Say goodbye to sitting in traffic or rushing from work to the clinic. Therapy happens wherever you have an internet connection.
  2. A Comfortable, Familiar Environment: For many children (particularly those who are neurodivergent or experience anxiety), the clinic environment can be overwhelming. Teletherapy allows them to learn and practice in their own safe space.
  3. Real-World Application: Telehealth allows our Speech Pathologists to see you or your child in your natural environment. We can incorporate your child's own toys into the session, making home practice much more realistic.
  4. Consistency of Care: If you or your child have a mild sniffle, or if you are travelling interstate for the school holidays, you don't have to miss a session. Consistent practice equals faster progress!

NDIS and Medicare Funding for Telehealth

The Australian healthcare system fully recognises teletherapy as a valid and effective method of delivering allied health care.

  • NDIS: Telehealth sessions are fully funded under the NDIS for Self-Managed and Plan-Managed participants, billed at the standard therapeutic support rate.
  • Medicare: If you have a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan from your GP, you can claim your Medicare rebates for telehealth appointments just as you would for an in-clinic visit.
  • Private Health: Most major Australian private health funds now cover telepractice. We recommend checking with your specific provider regarding your "Extras" cover.

How Does It Work? Is It Complicated?

Not at all! We use user-friendly, fiercely secure, and privacy-compliant telehealth platforms.

Here is what you need:

  • A computer, laptop, or tablet with a camera and microphone (an iPad is great, but a laptop is often best for screen-sharing activities).
  • A reliable internet connection.
  • A quiet space in your home.

Prior to your first session, our Canterbury reception team will email you a secure link. At your appointment time, you simply click the link, and your daar Speech Pathologist will be there waiting for you.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is teletherapy as effective as in-person speech therapy?

Yes. Extensive clinical research in Australia and globally has shown that, for most speech and language goals, telehealth is just as effective as traditional face-to-face therapy. The key to progress is the expertise of the Speech Pathologist and the consistency of the practice, both of which are fully supported online.

Will my young child actually sit still in front of a screen?

You would be surprised! Our paediatric teletherapy sessions do not look like boring work meetings. Our Speech Pathologists at daar are experts at keeping kids engaged using interactive digital games, colourful on-screen activities, and movement breaks. For very young toddlers, our telehealth sessions often run as a "parent coaching" model, where the clinician guides you on how to facilitate therapy with your child on the living room floor.

Do we have to commit to teletherapy forever, or can we do a mix?

We offer complete flexibility. Many of our local Canterbury clients choose a "hybrid" model. For example, they might visit the clinic for their initial assessment and first few sessions and then transition to teletherapy for their ongoing weekly practice. You can mix and match depending on what works best for your schedule.
